FAQs – Everything You Need to Know

❓ How many Bitcoin are there?
There will only ever be 21 Million (21,000,000) Bitcoin in existence. As of March 2025 there are about 19.8 million (19,830,000) Bitcoin mined. The last Bitcoin will be mined in the year 2140.

❓ What is Bitcoin Mining?
Bitcoin mining is a process where the Bitcoin miners (computers) solve complex math problems that both secure the network and process the transactions. The first miner to solve an equation earns newly created Bitcoin as a reward. Every four years, the Bitcoin network undergoes a halving, which reduces the number of new Bitcoins miners receive by 50%, making Bitcoin scarcer over time. This halving cycle continues until all 21 million Bitcoin are mined, reinforcing its fixed supply and deflationary nature.

What are Sats?
Sats (short for Satoshis) are the smallest unit of Bitcoin. 1 Bitcoin = 1 hundred million (100,000,000) Sats. Think of it like cents to a dollar where $1 USD has 100 cents.

How do I determine Bitcoin’s price when it fluctuates?
Most wallets show Bitcoin’s price in colones or dollars in real-time. When paying at a business, they will quote the price in local currency, and their Bitcoin payment processor will automatically convert and lock in the exchange rate for at least 15 minutes.

What is an acceptable exchange rate when buying Bitcoin?
Market rates vary, but typical fees range from 2-7% for OTC purchases and 5-15% for ATM’s due to cash handling. In Costa Rica, we do not have exchanges with Bank integration so fees in the country are usually more expensive.

Why should I use Bitcoin instead of traditional payment methods?

      • No banks or intermediaries
      • Lower transaction fees
      • Instant, global transactions
      • Full control over your money
      • Enhanced Privacy
      • Support the development of your local bitcoin economy
